KYIV: Ukraine’s army says it has used high-precision US glide bombs to attack Russia’s Kursk region, and that is has recaptured some land in the eastern Ukrainian region of Kharkiv that has been under a Russian operation since spring.

Ukraine’s Air Force Commander Lt. Gen. Mykola Oleschuk has issued a video purporting to show a Russian platoon base being struck in Kursk, where Ukrainian troops launched a surprise cross-border attack on August 6. He stated the assault with GBU-39 bombs, which were provided by the US, resulted in Russian casualties and the demolition of equipment. The video also showed multiple blasts and plumes of smoke rising at the area.

Many of Kyiv’s backers oppose Ukraine using donated arms for anything but defensive purposes. However, Kyiv has argued that its Kursk attack is essentially defensive and aimed at reducing attacks on Ukrainian land from Russia.

US officials have said that America supports Ukraine’s use of shorter-range arms such as glide bombs in its strikes across the border.
