WARSAW: According to a Polish Radio report quoting the President of Poland, the missile incident that killed two citizens of Poland near the country’s Ukraine border was likely an accident, and the missile was probably not Russian, Polish Radio reported.

“We must be prepared that various events resulting from the war taking place abroad may be repeated,” Andrzej Duda said in an interview in Rzeszow, southwestern Poland, on Friday.

“We’re doing everything to prevent this from happening, but it was practically impossible to prevent this misfortune,” he added.

The President explained that he had been told while speaking to officials of military affairs and relevant experts, that there was no anti-missile system that would have been able to take out the missile in such circumstances.

Following a sitting of the National Security Bureau, Andrzej Duda elaborated that there was no sign that the Przewodow incident was an intentionally carried-out strike on Poland; also, no clues were present that would indicate that Russia launched the missile. A probe is being undertaken in which sleuths from Ukraine were likely to take part, Duda said.

The earliest reported accounts of the event stated that the remains found were likely from a Ukrainian anti-missile system that had engaged in thwarting a Russian aerial strike.

A new influx of refugees from Ukraine

The President revealed that Warsaw expected a new massive influx of refugees, for which Polish authorities were preparing.

“At a time when the war in Ukraine is taking place, which is the result of the Russian invasion of this country, Podkarpacie [a region of southwest Poland] has passed the test,” the President said.

“The energy infrastructure in Ukraine was brutally destroyed and demolished by the Russians, and Ukrainians will not have in many cases ways to heat their apartments, they will not have hot water. It is likely that a new wave of refugees will flow into Poland,” – AA/APP
