KYIV: In the occupied regions of Ukraine, residents are being urged to participate in what local authorities are branding as “local elections.”

However, these elections are embroiled in controversy and are viewed with skepticism by international observers.

Ukraine’s foreign minister swiftly denounced the polls as a “sham,” emphasizing that the results would lack any legal validity. The main point of concern lies in the fact that all candidates in these elections are either Russian nationals or individuals closely aligned with Moscow. Moreover, some voters have reported being coerced to cast their ballots in the presence of armed Russian soldiers, a situation that further undermines the integrity of the electoral process.

Ukraine has made it clear that any of its citizens found to be involved in organizing these elections will face consequences in the future. This stance underscores the Ukrainian government’s commitment to protecting its sovereignty and condemning any attempts to legitimize the Russian occupation.

The Council of Europe, a prominent human rights body, has strongly condemned the elections in the “illegally annexed Ukrainian territories.” They categorize this move as a “flagrant violation of international law,” emphasizing Russia’s consistent disregard for established norms. The council has not only reaffirmed that these regions are an integral part of Ukraine but also criticized the elections for creating an illusion of democracy. The statement underscores the international community’s concern about the manipulation of democratic processes in the occupied territories.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken also weighed in on the matter, labeling the elections as “illegitimate.” His comments led to a retort from the Russian embassy in the U.S., which accused Washington of meddling in Russia’s internal affairs. The exchange highlights the ongoing diplomatic tensions surrounding the situation.

These elections, slated to conclude soon, are occurring in four regions that Russia does not have full control over: Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine, as well as the southern regions of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson. Together, these territories represent approximately 15% of Ukraine’s sovereign land. The elections in Crimea, which has been under illegal Russian occupation since 2014, further deepen the controversy. Simultaneously, local polls are being conducted in Russia itself, underlining the complex political dynamics at play.
