KYIV: At least five people were killed in Russian shelling attacks in the south and east of Ukraine over the past twenty-four hours, Ukrainian officials said on Thursday.

Ukrainian cities and towns near the frontlines have been subjected to relentless artillery fire since Russia invaded last February.

Three Ukrainians were killed in an attack on Chornobaivka in the southern Kherson region on Thursday, said Andriy Yermak, President Volodymyr Zelensky’s chief of staff.

Andriy Yermak shared photos on social media of a destroyed building and a pool of blood on the floor in what he said was the aftermath of the attack.

Interior Minister Igor Klymenko said another five were wounded and sixty buildings destroyed.

Ukraine’s push against Russia

Ukraine’s military has said it is trying to push Russian troops back from the banks of the Dnipro river — the de facto frontline in the Kherson region — to protect the towns of Ukraine from daily Russian artillery fire.

Another 2 people were killed by shelling on Ukrainian-held areas of the eastern Donetsk region over the last twenty-four hours, governor Igor Moroz said Thursday.
