BEIJING: In a rare telephone conversation with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Thursday, Chinese foreign minister says his country is concerned regarding the year-old conflict with Moscow spinning out of control and asked talks on a political solution with Russia.

Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang told Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba that Beijing has “always upheld an objective and fair position on Ukraine, has committed itself to supporting and promoting peace and advancing talks and calls on the world to create conditions for dialogue,” China’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Qin Gang said that they hoped that all sides will remain calm and rational, restart peace dialogue as soon as possible, and drive for a return to the path of political solution. He added that Beijing will continue to play a productive role toward reaching a cease-fire, mitigating the crisis, ending warfare, and restoring peace.

China had also issued a peace proposal for Ukraine in February and urged for peace talks and cease-fire. Russia lauded the proposal but the West rejected it. According to media reports, Chinese President Xi Jinping is likely to visit Moscow by next week.
