OSLO, Norway: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Oslo for a crucial meeting with leaders from the five Nordic countries, who have been key donors in supporting Ukraine in its conflict against Russia, according to the Norwegian government.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store extended a warm welcome to Zelensky, affirming Norway’s ongoing commitment to support Ukraine’s defense. Zelensky is scheduled to hold initial talks with Store before participating in a broader meeting with leaders from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden.

Facing challenges in Ukraine’s counter-offensive launched in July, Zelensky aims to rebuild support among Ukraine’s allies, especially amidst growing dissent. After a visit to Argentina and a trip to the United States seeking additional aid, Zelensky’s surprise visit to Oslo underscores the importance of cementing Nordic support.

While in Washington, Zelensky sought approval for a new $60 billion aid package but left without securing a commitment from a divided Congress. Despite describing the signals as “positive,” the outcome underscores the urgency of garnering support from key allies.

The Nordic countries have been pivotal supporters of Ukraine, offering substantial aid since the beginning of the conflict in February 2022. Norway, in particular, announced a comprehensive civilian and military aid package of 6.8 billion euros ($7.3 billion) to Ukraine over the period of 2023-2027. Both Norway and Denmark have supplied Ukraine with tanks, weapons, and munitions, with plans to donate F-16 fighters to the Ukrainian army. Sweden is also considering contributing Gripen fighter jets to bolster Ukraine’s defence capabilities. The Oslo meeting serves as a strategic opportunity for Zelensky to solidify the backing of these Nordic nations and enhance collaborative efforts in the face of continued geopolitical challenges.
