LONDON, England: Britain’s Conservative Party will announce its new leader on November 2, following a major electoral defeat.
Former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who led the party to its worst election performance, has announced his intention to step down. The leadership contest will last nearly four months, ending with a vote among party members to select one of the final two candidates.
Sunak’s campaign concluded in failure on July 4, when the Labour Party, led by Keir Starmer, won a landslide victory, ending 14 years of Conservative rule.
Sunak stated he would quit once his successor’s arrangements were set. Up to eight candidates are expected to run, with the Conservative Party’s usual process involving multiple ballots among lawmakers to narrow the field before the final party-wide vote.
