ROME:  The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that humanitarian funding cuts by governments have forced the U.N. agency to cut food rations to the world’s hungriest people, western media reported on Tuesday.

It said each 1% cut in humanitarian aid risks to push 400,000 people towards starvation.

WFP sees decline in contributions

The agency added more than 60% funding cut this year was the highest in WFP’s 60-year history adding that this is the first time the Rome-based agency has seen decline in contributions while needs rise.

The WFP has been forced to cut rations in almost half its programs, including Afghanistan, Syria, Somalia and Haiti.

The WFP in a statement feared that 24 million people could slip into emergency hunger over the next year.

WFP’s executive director, Cindy McCain, stated governments should increase assistance, not decrease it with starvation at record levels.

She said if the UN body doesn’t receive the support to avert further catastrophe, the world will witness more conflict, more chaos and more hunger.

The WFP warned that if such trend continues it would be impossible to save hungry nations from starvation.
