ISLAMABAD/UNITED NATIONS: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned Monday’s suicide bombing at a Peshawar mosque that claimed 93 lives and left several wounded, saying it was “particularly abhorrent” that the attack happened at a worship place.

“Freedom of belief or religion, including the ability to worship in security and peace, is a universal basic human right,” his Spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement at its Headquarters in New York.

” The statement said, “The SG extends his heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and wishes an early recovery to those injured,” the statement said.

Un Chief Expresses Solidarity with the People of Pakistan

The statement said that “the secretary-general reiterates the solidarity of the United Nations with the government and the people of Pakistan in their efforts to counter violent extremism and terrorism.”

Responding to a question about the increasing number of attacks across Pakistan for which the banned Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, based in Afghanistan, has claimed responsibility, the spokesman said that “every government or every authority that has control over (its) territory has a responsibility towards the international community to make sure that their territory is not being used for terrorist activities.”

Meanwhile, Csaba Korosi, the President of the UN General Assembly, also strongly condemned the attack in Peshawar and said, “Targeting people as they pray is a truly horrid and cowardly attack.”
