NEW YORK: United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday strongly condemned the latest satellite test by North Korea, his spokesman said in a statement.

North Korea attempted to launch its first military reconnaissance satellite early on Wednesday, but it badly crashed into the sea, according to media reports.

Pyongyang has reportedly vowed to conduct another test after learning what first failed.

The UN chief said any test using ballistic missile technology contradicts relevant Security Council (SC) resolutions.

UN Chief Urges for Talks

Guterres reiterated his call on the DPRK to stop such acts and to swiftly resume talks to achieve the goal of durable peace and full and verifiable denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

The launch created confusion in Japan and South Korea.

Authorities in Seoul, South Korea’s capital, sent text messages urging people to move to safety but later said they were issued in error.

Japan’s government also warned citizens in Okinawa prefecture, located in the country’s south.
