UN Committee Calls for Enhanced Digital Literacy to Combat Disinformation, Misinformation

UNITED NATIONS: At the conclusion of its 46th Session, the Committee on Information (COI) of the United Nations adopted a unanimous annual resolution to address challenges stemming from the evolving media landscape.

Chaired by Ambassador Usman Jadoon, Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, the session deliberated on critical issues concerning global communication and media literacy. Under-Secretary General for Global Communications Melisa Fleming also participated in the session.

Ambassador Jadoon highlighted the resolution’s focus on recognizing the complexities posed by disinformation and misinformation in the digital age.

The resolution underscored the imperative for member states to prioritize media and digital literacy initiatives to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and effectively tackle climate change challenges. The resolution also emphasizes the need to combat hate speech and incitement to violence.
