UN Human Rights Chief Condemns Burning of Copies of Holy Quran

GENEVA: The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has strongly denounced attacks on places of worship and disrespect towards holy books including Quran, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on Friday.

During his speech at the Human Rights Council on combatting religious hatred, which incites hostility, discrimination, violence, the UN official highlighted his efforts to identify measures that can be taken by states and other actors to address discrimination based on religion or belief.

He expressed serious concern about the treatment of immigrants and the targeting of minorities based on religion or belief for political purposes.

He also explained that his office is intensifying its efforts to fulfill its responsibilities in human rights, in accordance with the United Nations Principles on Business and Human Rights.
