UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has called upon the international community, particularly developed nations, to leverage emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) for societal advancement while emphasizing the critical need for regulation to prevent potential harm.
Speaking at the Annual Parliamentary Hearing, hosted jointly by the President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Pakistani representative Senator Mohsin Aziz underscored the urgency of implementing legal frameworks, particularly in the debate surrounding Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems (LAWS), also known as “killer robots.”
Senator Aziz stressed the necessity of treaties and conventions to address the risks associated with these technologies, highlighting the potential threat they pose without proper regulation. He also called attention to the weaponization of information, communications, and cyberspace, advocating for the careful application of international law to maintain peace and security.
With the theme of the joint IPU-UN hearing aligning with the IPU’s focus on peace and international security in 2024, Senator Aziz urged governments to collaborate internationally to develop adaptable regulatory standards for new technologies.
He emphasized the importance of awareness and collaboration to ensure that advancements in technology contribute positively to society while mitigating potential risks. —APP
