NEW YORK: Pakistan has called on the UN to actively seek to resolve disputes, such as Palestine and Kashmir, with several modalities for conflict resolution being available under the United Nations Charter, local media reported.

This was stated by Pakistan’s permanent Ambassador to UN, Munir Akram after UN Chief Antonio Guterres announced his priorities for 2024 as the world faces critical issues. He said that the current threats to security and peace emanate mainly from violations of the fundamental principles of the UN Charter, particularly non-use of force, demand of self-determination, foreign occupation, great power rivalries, and a new arms race.

The UN chief’s report noted that a volatile global security environment is exacerbated by increasing poverty, injustice, climate change, hate, intolerance, inequality, and Islamophobia.

Munir Akram said that they must prevent a major conflict, pointing out that it was essential to address the root causes of terrorism and emerging forms, as also “state terrorism” and “state-sponsored” terrorism; and ensure the security of human rights while combating terrorism.

He called for a Security Council that is more representative, more transparent, more democratic, more accountable and more effective. He further said that there was a need for a binding global convention on the right to development.
