UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has denounced as “unacceptable” the collective punishment inflicted upon the entire Palestinian population of Gaza by Israeli Occupation forces, characterizing it as “war crimes and crimes against humanity.”

“Major crimes against humanity are being committed even as we speak, in Palestine, in Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOK) and in other situations of oppression, occupation and violence,” Pakistani delegate Rabia Ijaz told the General Assembly’s Sixth (legal) Committee).

Expressing deep concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza due to indiscriminate aerial bombardment, including attacks on civilian and UN-protected targets, Ms. Ijaz condemned the inhumane blockade of food, fuel, and medicines imposed by Israeli Occupation forces as unacceptable collective punishment.

“The current cycle of aggression and violence is a sad reminder and a direct consequence of over seven decades of illegal Israeli occupation, aggression, and disrespect for international law, including UNSC (Un Security Council) resolutions that recognize the inalienable right to self-determination of the Palestinian people.,” Ms. Ijaz said.

She advocated for the establishment of a viable, sovereign, and contiguous State of Palestine based on pre-1967 borders, with Al Quds Al-Sharif as its capital, emphasizing that peace in the Middle East hinges on such a resolution.

Furthermore, Ms Ijaz underscored the need for international collaboration to eliminate impunity for perpetrators and ensure justice for victims.

While acknowledging the significance of the International Law Commission’s draft articles as a starting point, she cautioned that it is premature to draw definitive conclusions about their essence and structure. Despite valuable discussions during the April resumed session, disparities in viewpoints persist, highlighting the ongoing challenges in addressing these complex issues. —APP
