UNITED NATIONS: The UN Security Council has scheduled a meeting next week to discuss the recent International Court of Justice (ICJ) decision related to the Israel-Gaza conflict.

Algeria called for the meeting, aiming to give “binding effect” to the ICJ’s pronouncement on provisional measures against the Israeli occupation.

The ICJ ruled that Israel must prevent genocidal acts in its conflict with Hamas and allow aid into Gaza. While not explicitly calling for an end to hostilities, the decision emphasizes the need for a ceasefire to implement the recommended measures effectively.

The Security Council, historically divided on the Israeli-Palestinian issue, has agreed to only two resolutions since the conflict’s start in October.

The US, a key ally of Israel, has resisted calls for an immediate ceasefire despite international pressure.

The ICJ decision underscores Israel’s responsibility under the UN Genocide Convention. The situation remains complex, with ongoing military operations and pressing humanitarian concerns.
