NEW YORK: The United Nations Security Council on Wednesday condemned the deadly attack that targeted synagogues and churches on Sunday in the mainly Muslim region of Dagestan in Russia, according to a statement.

“The members of the UN Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the heinous and cowardly terrorist attack,” the statement said.

Dagestan, Russia’s southern region, ended three days of mourning on Wednesday after an attack by militants who, according to authorities, killed 21 people, mostly police, and attacked Christian and Jewish houses of worship in two cities.

Sunday’s violence in Dagestan’s regional capital of Makhachkala and nearby Derbent was the latest that officials blamed on extremists in the North Caucasus. It was also the deadliest attack in Russia since March, when gunmen opened fire at a concert in suburban Moscow, killing at least 145 people.
