UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations Security Council is set to meet on Friday to discuss the recent pager blasts in Lebanon, which targeted the militant group Hezbollah.
Slovenia’s U.N. Ambassador Samuel Zbogar, the president of the Security Council for September, confirmed that the meeting was requested by Algeria on behalf of Arab states.
The explosions have raised alarm about a potential escalation of violence in Lebanon. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that these blasts could signal the start of a larger military operation, describing the situation as a “serious risk of dramatic escalation.”
He emphasized the importance of preventing civilian objects from being weaponized and called on all parties to show restraint to avoid further conflict.
