WASHINGTON: The UN Support Mission in Libya has reiterated the pivotal role of the 5+5 Joint Military Commission in maintaining the country’s ceasefire agreement.

Stephanie Koury, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Political Affairs and Officer-in-Charge of the UN Support Mission in Libya highlighted the Commission’s critical function during a recent visit to their headquarters in Sirte.

In a post on “X”, Koury emphasized the importance of the Commission in upholding the ceasefire and addressing ongoing security challenges.

“We discussed strategies to advance the implementation of the ceasefire agreement, including the withdrawal of foreign fighters and mercenaries,” Koury noted. “Ensuring peace and stability is vital for Libyan citizens as they seek a lasting political resolution.”

The 5+5 Joint Military Commission was established to oversee and enforce ceasefire agreements and military arrangements between Libya’s rival factions.

The Commission played a key role in the October 2020 UN-sponsored ceasefire agreement, which ended the conflict in and around Tripoli between the eastern-based army and western-based authorities.
