GENEVA: The United Nations’ refugees chief, Filippo Grandi, on Monday denounced the politicization of migration in European elections, warning that demonizing refugees would only make the issue more difficult to deal with. His statement came following significant gains made by far-right parties in the European Parliament elections.

In an interview with AFP, Grandi expressed concern that the refugee-migration discourse had been manipulated and portrayed as a threat by some politicians.

Grandi emphasized the damaging effects of demonizing refugees, stating that such rhetoric only serves to exacerbate the challenges associated with migration. He acknowledged the legitimate concerns posed by increasing numbers of refugees and migrants but cautioned against adopting a simplistic narrative that vilifies them.

Grandi highlighted the need for a collaborative approach to address the root causes of migration, emphasizing that efforts to build barriers and tighten policies do not offer long-term solutions. Instead, he urged countries to work together to tackle the underlying factors driving people to leave their homes.

Drawing attention to ongoing conflicts, such as the crisis in Sudan, Grandi underscored the importance of addressing the conditions that force people to flee. He emphasized that focusing on root causes and improving conditions along migration routes is essential for managing migration effectively.

Expressing hope that the anti-migrant rhetoric in Europe would diminish post-election, Grandi stressed the importance of politicians shifting their focus towards constructive action. He warned that the outcomes of the elections could influence attitudes beyond Europe and urged rich countries to uphold principles guaranteeing the rights of people to seek protection across borders.
