NEW YORK: The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) is likely to vote Tuesday on a draft resolution demanding an immediate humanitarian truce in the war between Hamas and Israel in the Gaza Strip, diplomats said on Sunday.

The development comes following the US vetoed on Friday a UNSC demand for urgent humanitarian cease-fire in the Gaza Strip. Washington exercising its veto dashes a rising appeal for an immediate truce that had been led by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and regional countries. As a permanent UNSC member, the US vetoed resolution, while the UK, also a member, abstained on the vote on resolution.

Earlier, several attempts to adopt a resolution calling for a permanent truce were vetoed. The UN said around 80 percent of the population of Gaza has been displaced, facing shortages of fuel, food, medicine, and water along with the threat of disease.

Similarly, the UNGA in October approved a resolution — 121 votes in support, 14 against and 44 abstentions — asking for “an immediate, long term and sustained humanitarian ceasefire leading to a cessation of hostilities.”

Meanwhile, the Gaza health ministry spokesperson stated on Sunday 18,000 Palestinian people have been killed and 49,500 wounded in Israeli assaults on the Gaza Strip since October 7. The spokesperson, Ashraf Al-Qidra, said that the count included 297 people killed and over 550 injured in the last 24 hours.

The World Health Organization (WHO) head said it would be all but impossible to recover the “catastrophic” health situation in the Gaza Strip even as the board approved an emergency WHO motion by consensus to ensure more medical access to the enclave.

On the other hand, Palestinian authorities have also described a tragic health situation in the Gaza Strip, where Israel’s attack has left most of the people homeless, with no electricity, food, clean drinking water, and a health system facing collapse.
