UNICEF to Provide $270 mn for Nigeria Poverty Alleviation

ABUJA: The United Nations children’s agency, UNICEF has pledged to provide $270 million to Nigeria to help the country to reduce poverty, Western media reported on Tuesday.

The UNICEF has also vowed to set up an emergency operation center in Nigeria.

Nigerian Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Betta Edu briefed the UNICEF executives Christian Munduate and Eduardo Celades about future plans of the government to cope with the issue of poverty during a meeting in Abuja.

She said that the government of President Bola Tinubu wants to take 133 million citizens out of poverty but did not give a timeline to achieve the target.

UNICEF said the agency will help set up a humanitarian emergency operation center to monitor and control emergencies, and also help the ministry to enhance its capacity.

Edu said the government will help about 71 million extremely poor Nigerian adding that they need to work at the speed of light to bring social programs to lessen the burdens on the poor.

Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy is grappling with record debt, unemployment and uncertainty.

Earlier the World Bank said in report said that slow growth, little human capital, market weaknesses are the issues hampering Nigeria’s poverty reduction efforts.
