Staff Report

SWABI: The University of Swabi in the northwest province of Pakistan has sacked 34 faculty members of different departments, stated a notification issued on Wednesday.

The University administration stated, “It is going to disengage all 34 teachers working on fixed pay with the University.” Students, their parents, teachers, and people from all walks of life from across Pakistan termed the move as a matter of high concern and questioned why dozens of highly qualified Ph.D. faculty members were fired by the University administration without any reason.

Talking to the media, all sacked teachers said that they spent several years in the University and the Higher Education Commission and the University administration promised them that fair opportunities will be offered to them. They added that no promise was fulfilled by the university administration and HEC.

They expressed disappointment over the development and termed it an anti-education act of the Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr Nasir Jamal Khattak of the University.

The teachers said that this act will not only destroy the future of the talented Ph.D. holders’ teachers but also affect the university students. They said that they would knock at all the doors for justice and asked the higher education commission, concerned authorities, and other relevant quarters to take notice of this irony.

Students of the University expressed solidarity with their teachers and demanded the University administration stop the ill-treatment of the teachers. A student of the department of Physics of the University said that the act will give a very negative impression of the University and asked the administration to take measures to stop discriminative actions against the faculty members.

The university students warned to take to roads if the administration failed to reverse its decision within three days.

Local people in the area also termed it an act of irony to disengage dozens of teachers from the university. Parents also voiced concern about the future of their children as this act will negatively affect the studies of their children.

They said that this act indicates that the Vice Chancellor of the University does not care about the studies of the students as he earlier sacked contractual teachers and running the university by hiring visiting teachers. They asked the higher authorities and HEC to take immediate notice of the situation to save the education in Swabi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
