NEW YORK: The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Thursday approved a draft resolution asking for a team of independent experts in order to evaluate the international strategy on Afghanistan, and develop a “coherent and integrated approach” to address the challenges and issues facing the war-hit country.

The resolution was tabled by Japan and UAE, the two penholders of the Afghan file at the UN Security Council. The two nations also authored a 2nd resolution extending the mandate of the United Nations assistance mission to Afghanistan for another term, until March 17, 2024. The UNSC adopted the two resolutions unanimously.

The UAE’s permanent representative to the UN Lana Nusseibeh told Arab News following the vote that “there is an odd situation in Afghanistan today, and we required an extraordinary response from the UNSC. I am confident the resolution will contribute to that effort.”

The resolution also highlights the significance of the equal, full, and meaningful participation of girls and women while also upholding human rights. Japan’s permanent representative to the UN Ishikane Kimihiro welcomed the unanimous adoption of the resolutions, and said the UNSC’s support for the UN assistance mission comes when “huge challenges facing Afghanistan and its people, including the dire economic and humanitarian situation, the threat of terrorism, and the depreciation of opportunities for girls and women in employment and education.”
