BEIJING: A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson on Wednesday said that Palestinian-Israeli conflict has resulted in a devastating humanitarian crisis in Gaza and severely impacted regional stability and peace.
Mao Ning during a regular briefing said the United Nations Security Council must take immediate action to press for a ceasefire. She added that this is a moral obligation that the Council cannot shy away.
She stressed that this is a political obligation that the Council must fulfill in accordance with the UN Charter.
The spokesperson went on to say that Chinese side has warned that the US veto of a UNSC draft resolution pushes the Gaza situation into a more dangerous one.
The draft resolution that sought an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, won 13 votes in favor among the 15 members of the Security Council. The United States again used vote power while Britain abstained.
Mao Ning said different parties including China, expressed dissatisfaction and strong disappointment and with the veto.
She said Algeria, on behalf of the Arab states, tabled the draft resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and immediate release of all hostages, while guaranteeing access to humanitarian supplies, and the rejection of forced displacement.
Mao said the draft resolution was backed by the overwhelming majority of the Council members adding that China voted in favor of the draft resolution as well.
The spokesperson further said that China will continue to work with the rest of the global community to push the Council to take further actions to end fighting in Gaza, de-escalate the humanitarian situation, and implementation of the two-state solution for lasting peace and security in the Middle East.
