NEW YORK: The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to convene today to appoint a special envoy for Afghanistan and discuss the outcomes of a recent international conference held in Doha regarding Afghanistan.

As per media reports during this session, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will provide a report on the appointment of a special envoy for Afghanistan and the recent international conference held in Doha. Security Council Resolution 2721, issued in December of the previous year, mandated the Secretary-General to update the Security Council within 60 days on the results of consultations.

The interim government of Afghanistan claimed that Afghanistan is not undergoing a crisis and emphasizes that with the United Nations Assistance Mission already operating within the country, there is no requirement for the appointment of a new representative.

“As for the special representative, the stance of Afghanistan is very clear and there is no requirement to appoint a special representative for Afghanistan,” Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesman of the interim Afghan government said.

Mujahid further stated, “Afghanistan is stable and free from any crisis, requiring international collaboration within existing frameworks.”  He said that there is no necessity for a special representative.

The UN meeting on Afghanistan in Doha took place last week and the interim government of Afghanistan declined an invitation to attend it.
