UNITED NATIONS: US Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, highlighted Washington’s differences with Moscow and Beijing over human rights in Afghanistan during a press briefing on Wednesday.

She emphasized that the US will consider human rights, particularly the worsening situation for Afghan women and girls under the Islamic Emirate, before recognizing its government.

Greenfield expressed the need to hold the Islamic Emirate accountable and push for change, stressing that a society sidelining half its population cannot thrive. The ambassador pointed out that the US differs from China and Russia in prioritizing human rights before recognizing the Taliban government. She also supported the appointment of a UN special envoy for Afghanistan, an idea opposed by the Islamic Emirate, with Russia and China making their approval conditional on the Islamic Emirate’s consent.
