NIAIMEY, Niger: The US Defence Department and the Nigerien Ministry of National Defence have reached an agreement for the withdrawal of US military forces from Niger by September 15. This decision entails the drawdown of fewer than 1,000 troops and their equipment, including MQ-9 Reaper drones, within a four-month timeframe.
Despite the impending withdrawal, both parties express interest in maintaining a relationship. Discussions have centered on ensuring a secure withdrawal process and facilitating military flights. The Defence Department has collaborated with the Nigerien military for over a decade, focusing on counterterrorism efforts in West Africa.
Previously, US forces operated from bases in Agadez and Niamey, conducting surveillance and reconnaissance missions. Now, operations are restricted to Niamey, where Russian forces have also commenced activities. The US anticipates leaving behind non-mobile equipment, prioritizing the removal of sensitive and hazardous items.
While concerns exist about the potential for Russian involvement, assurances have been provided regarding the safeguarding of remaining equipment. Both delegations have affirmed guarantees of protection and security during the withdrawal process.
Despite the withdrawal, diplomatic dialogue between the US and Niger will continue, emphasizing areas of common interest and the future of bilateral relations.
