US Asks UN to Approve Additional Help Access to Quake-hit Syria

NEW YORK: The US on Sunday called for the UNSC to “vote immediately” to allow the supply of U.N. assistance to rebel-controlled northwest Syria via Turkey following the deadly quake.

The US ambassador to the UN said that they must vote immediately on a resolution to notice the UN’s call for authorization of more border crossings for the supply of humanitarian help.

 UN aid chief Martin Griffiths said that he would urge the UNSC to authorize aid and assistance access via two additional border crossings, saying there is “a very clear humanitarian matter.”

The death toll from the quake in Turkey and Syria passed more than 33,000 on Sunday.

Earlier, the WHO head said on Sunday that Syrian President Bashar Assad expressed openness to additional border crossings for help and assistance to be brought to earthquake victims in the rebel-controlled northwest areas of Syria.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus also held a meeting with Syrian President in Damascus and discussed the response to the quake which has killed over 33,000 people in Syria and Turkiye.

The WHO chief told a virtual press conference from Syria that he met with President Assad, who signaled he was open to mulling more cross-border access points for the current emergency situation.
