US, Bahrain Discuss Defense Cooperation

MANAMA: The United States and Bahrain have discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation, especially in the defense sector, Arab media reported on Monday.

Bahrain Defense Minister Lieutenant-General Abdulla bin Hassan Al Nuaimi, met General Michael Kurilla, the Commander of US Central Command (CENTCOM), and his accompanying delegation in Manama.

Lieutenant-General Dheyab bin Saqr Al-Nuaimi, the Chief of Staff of the Bahrain Defense Force was also present in the meeting.

 US, Bahrain Discuss Defense Cooperation

Bahrain’s Defense Minister praised the ongoing cooperation and coordination between Manama and Washington in different areas, especially the military one.

Top-ranking officials from Bahrain’s armed forces also attended the meeting, vital to enhance military cooperation between the two states.

Two weeks ago, the US and Bahrain held the third annual US-Bahrain Strategic Dialogue in Washington, reaffirming their commitment to freedom of navigation in international waters.

The US and Bahrain enjoy strong ties, and the two signed the Defense Cooperation Agreement in 1991, allowing the US military to use Bahrain’s facilities. Additionally, Bahrain was designated a Major non-NATO ally by the US in 2001.
