WASHINGTON: The United States (US) has intelligence reports that the Chinese government is considering supplying drones and ammunition to Russia for the war in Ukraine, CNN reported while quoting sources familiar with the intelligence.

It appears that Beijing has yet to make a final decision, CNN quoted a source as saying, but talks between Russia and China regarding the price and scope of the equipment are underway.

Since invading Ukraine, Russia has repeatedly requested ammunition and drones from China, the news channel reported. The Chinese leadership had been actively debating whether or not to send the lethal aid.

However, US intelligence officials have collected information in recent weeks that suggests China is now leaning towards providing the equipment.

US warns of China’s potential military support to Russia

Last week, the US and its allies began publicly warning regarding China’s potential military support to Russia to deter Beijing from moving ahead and crossing a point of no return.

US officials would not reveal the detail of intelligence the US has seen, suggesting the shift in China’s posture; however, senior officials have been concerned that they have been actively sharing its intelligence with partners and allies over the last week.

To a question on Friday about the potential sale of drones to Russia, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said that “China has always taken a responsible and prudent approach to military exports and avoid arms sales to belligerents or conflict areas.”
