US, Canada Worked Closely on India Connection to Sikh Leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s Assassination

OTTAWA: Canada’s authorities worked “very closely” with the US on intelligence that Indian agents had been possibly involved in the killing of a Sikh leader in British Columbia this year, a top Canadian government source disclosed on Tuesday.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Monday that the country’s intelligence agencies were energetically pursuing reliable allegations tying India’s agents to the shooting of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June.

The top Canadian government sources told Reuter, “We have been working with the United States very closely, including on the public revelation yesterday. The evidence in the Canadian government’s possession would be shared “in due course”.

Prime Minister Trudeau on Tuesday told the media that the matter had far-reaching consequences in global law, and asked New Delhi to take the matter very seriously.

U.S. officials, earlier on Tuesday, said that Washington supported Canada’s probe.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar supported creating a Sikh independent state called Khalistan in India’s Punjab.

Earlier, British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly Tuesday said that his government completely supports a Canadian probe regarding India’s involvement in the assassination of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen.

James Cleverly, who is in New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly, told the media that he met with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and discussed the issue with him.

Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly announced that an Indian diplomat, identified as the head of India’s intelligence service in Canada, would be expelled from the country.

PM Trudeau announced that Canada’s response would be measured over the matter and he would discuss the issue with world leaders as well.
