STOCKHOLM: The United States (US) clarified its position on Tuesday, stating that it does not support attacks inside Russia following recent drone strikes on high-rise buildings in Moscow. However, the US reiterated that Russia bears responsibility for the ongoing war with Ukraine.
During a visit to Sweden by Secretary of State Antony Blinken, a spokesperson for the US State Department addressed the issue, emphasizing their focus on providing Ukraine with the necessary equipment and training to reclaim its sovereign territory.
“While we generally do not support attacks inside Russia, our primary objective remains supporting Ukraine in its efforts to defend itself,” stated the spokesperson.
US Assessing Situation
Regarding the recent drone strikes in Moscow, where residential buildings were targeted for the first time since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the United States is currently assessing the situation. Russian President Vladimir Putin promptly blamed Kyiv for the attacks, but the State Department spokesperson refrained from assigning blame, awaiting further investigation.
In contrast, the spokesperson highlighted Russia’s repeated air strikes on Kyiv, which occurred for the 17th time in May alone.
“Russia initiated this unprovoked war against Ukraine. At any point, Russia has the ability to end this conflict by withdrawing its forces from Ukraine instead of perpetuating brutal attacks against Ukrainian cities and its people on a daily basis,” the spokesperson added.
