WASHINGTON: The United States expressed disappointment over the decision of the small South Pacific nation of Nauru to switch its diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China.

While acknowledging Nauru’s sovereign right to make such decisions, the State Department conveyed its dismay, highlighting Taiwan as a reliable, likeminded, and democratic partner. The statement pointed out China’s track record of unfulfilled promises in exchange for diplomatic relations.

Nauru’s announcement, stating that it would now recognize Taiwan “as an inalienable part of China’s territory,” is seen as a significant development favoring Beijing’s regional ambitions. China considers Taiwan its own territory and has long-term plans to reunify, even if it requires the use of force.

Nauru, with a population of 12,500, was one of the few remaining countries officially recognizing Taiwan on a diplomatic basis. The move is expected to strengthen China’s influence in the region. The diplomatic competition between Taiwan and China in the Pacific involves the offering of aid packages and assistance in various developmental sectors.
