WASHINGTON, USA: The United States has called for an urgent resolution to finalize a deal between Israel and Hamas to end the ongoing Gaza war. This statement comes amid rising frustration with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s stance on negotiations and his refusal to bow to mounting domestic and international pressure.

US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller expressed that Washington, alongside Egypt and Qatar, would intensify efforts in the coming days to push for a ceasefire agreement. This push comes after Israel’s military recovered six hostages killed in Gaza, fueling further tension. UN human rights chief Volker Turk has called for an independent investigation into allegations that these hostages were executed.

The complexities of negotiations are further compounded by Netanyahu’s insistence on maintaining control over the Philadelphi Corridor, a strategic area along the Gaza-Egypt border. Netanyahu claims that control of this area is essential to prevent Hamas from rearming. However, his stance has faced significant criticism from both within and outside Israel. Egypt and Saudi Arabia have condemned Israel’s assertions about the Philadelphi Corridor, arguing that these statements are attempts to deflect attention and hinder a ceasefire deal.

Meanwhile, Netanyahu’s approach has caused internal rifts within his government, with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and other allies expressing frustration over his rigidity in negotiations. President Joe Biden also expressed skepticism, indicating that Netanyahu was not doing enough to secure a deal for the remaining hostages.

Israel’s stance on Gaza continues to raise international concerns. Britain recently announced it would suspend some arms exports to Israel, citing risks of these weapons being used in ways that violate international humanitarian law. This decision adds to the growing international pressure on Israel to adjust its approach.

On the ground, the situation in Gaza remains dire. Ongoing Israeli military raids have resulted in significant casualties and destruction across Gaza and the West Bank, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. Amidst the turmoil, there is a growing push from within Israel and internationally for a deal that would not only end the fighting but also address the root causes of the conflict, such as the longstanding blockade of Gaza and the need for political reconciliation. The next few days will be critical in determining whether a sustainable solution can be reached or if the conflict will further escalate.
