MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused the US of inflaming the Middle East conflict by sending an aircraft carrier group to the region, adding “compromise solutions” were required and Putin hoped common sense would prevail.

President Putin, speaking at a conference in Moscow, stated on Wednesday the US move of dispatching an aircraft carrier group to Israel was a mistake. Putin said, “I don’t realize why Washington is dragging aircraft carrier groups into the Mediterranean Sea. I don’t understand the point”. He questioned, “Are they are going to bomb Lebanon?”.

He added that compromise solutions need to be looked for and such actions are inflaming the situation in the region. He has termed the violence between Palestinians and Israelis as a vivid example of the failure of Washington policy in the Middle East, which he says has taken no account of the needs of the people of Palestine.
Following the surprise action by a Palestinian group Hamas on Israel on Saturday, US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin stated Washington was moving a carrier group, which includes the USS Gerald R. Ford, to Israel.
