WASHINGTON:  The US Justice Department has appointed special counsel to investigate a case pertaining to the alleged involvement of President Joe Biden’s son Hunter in illicit foreign business deals.

Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Delaware federal prosecutor David Weiss, to investigate the case, AFP reported on Friday.

According to reports, David Weiss has recently investigated Hunter Biden on tax and gun charges in a case still in court.

David Weiss, who started the probe in 2019, has requested the relevant authorities to assign him special status so that he could probe Hunter Biden more widely.

Attorney General Merrick Garland said that keeping in view the extraordinary circumstances in the case he appointed David Weiss as special counsel to pursue his investigation.

Hunter Biden has been under investigation in Congress for his business contracts in China, Ukraine, and other states when his father served as vice president from 2009-2017.

A former business associate has recently informed Congress that Hunter had arranged several telephone calls between his father and his foreign partners.

The Republican opponents alleged that Joe Biden used his position to support his son. Biden has always dismissed the charges.

The development comes as Joe Biden is running for reelection, possibly against former president Donald Trump, who is also accused of felony crimes and being investigated by another Justice Department special counsel, Jack Smith.
