WASHINGTON: The US Justice Department and the Pentagon have joined hands to determine how secret military documents on the conflict in Ukraine made their way onto several social media sites, US media reported on Saturday.

US Justice Department, Pentagon to investigate matter of secret documents

Earlier, a small number of documents, including several marked “top secret,” were found on Telegram and Twitter on Wednesday. Since then, reporters, researchers, and social media investigators have discovered additional secret documents posted as early as March 1 on supplementary sites. This raises a swarm of questions about how extensive the breach may be and how much harm it could cause.

Pentagon also acknowledges the secret documents are genuine and add they are probing it. The US Department of Justice said on Friday evening it has also opened a probe and is jointly working with the Department of Defense.

US media reported that there was no word on who might be accountable for leaking these documents.

Meanwhile, Mikhailo Podolyak, an advisor to Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy, said on social media that he believed Moscow was responsible. The advisor called it an effort to “divert attention, cast doubts and suspicions, sow disharmony.”
