WASHINGTON: The US military claimed on Saturday that US and allied forces shot down 15 drones fired by Yemeni rebels into the Red Sea.

AFP reported that it was one of the Houthis’ largest assaults since they started in November a drive of drone and missile attacks against ships in the Red Sea in professed solidarity with Palestinian people during Israel’s war against people in Gaza.

The US Central Command claimed the “large-scale” Houthi assault occurred before dawn into the Red Sea. CENTCOM said in a statement via social media that US Navy ships and aircraft along with several coalition navy vessels and aircraft shot down fifteen of the drones.

AFP reported that On January 9, US and British troops shot down eighteen drones and three missiles fired by the rebels toward vessels in the Red Sea, the US military claimed.

US in December announced a maritime security initiative to protect Red Sea shipping from Houthi assaults, which have forced commercial ships to divert from the route that usually carries 12 % of international trade.

Since January the US and the UK have also launched repeated attacks on Houthi targets in Yemen in reply to the ship assaults, but the rebels have continued to attack merchant ships and have also targeted the US and British vessels.
