WASHINGTON: A senior US State Department official on Tuesday said that Ukraine is expected to get “good news” in its quest for more air defense systems at a NATO summit in Washington next week.

“We hope we’ll be able to get to the summit and make some new announcements on air defense,” the official stated, speaking on the condition of anonymity. “You have heard that the Ukrainians are keen to secure additional Patriots or similar systems. And I think we’ll have some additional good news for them on that front.”

The official refrained from revealing specific details regarding the nature or extent of the expected developments.

Ukraine has continuously urged its NATO allies to provide enhanced air defense systems in response to frequent missile and drone attacks by Russian forces since Moscow’s invasion in 2022.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit, scheduled from July 9 to July 11 in Washington, is set to mark the alliance’s 75th anniversary. It will convene leaders from NATO member states to deliberate on critical defense matters and reaffirm commitments to collective security amid evolving global challenges.

The summit holds particular significance against the backdrop of heightened tensions in Eastern Europe, where Ukraine continues to confront security challenges posed by Russia’s military actions.

The United States and its NATO partners have been pivotal in supporting Ukraine’s defense efforts since the onset of the conflict.
