WASHINGTON: The US Pentagon has named the three soldiers killed in Sunday’s attack in Jordan as Sgt. William Rivers, Spc. Kennedy Sanders, and Spc. Breonna Moffett, all from the Army Reserve in Georgia.
The US soldiers were still in their quarters at the US military base when the drone struck with little or no warning, reports the BBC’s US partner CBS.
The drone arrived at the same time as the returning US drone — and as a result, defense systems were shut down, official says.
An umbrella group for an Iran-backed militia calling itself the Islamic Resistance in Iraq yesterday said it was responsible for the attack, which injured more than 40 people.
Iran denies its involvement, calling the allegations “baseless” and “not involved in the decision-making of the resistance groups”.
White House says ‘not seeking war with Iran’ but will do whatever it takes to protect troops.
It is the first time US troops have been killed in strikes in the region since an October 7 attack by Hamas on Israel sparked the Gaza war.
