The increase in attacks on US personnel is linked to the war in Gaza, which started when the Palestinian group carried out a surprise attack on October 7. After the attack, the US rushed military assistance to Israel, which has conducted a relentless land, air, and naval strike on Gaza that the health ministry says has killed more than 11,300 people.

According to AFP, those deaths have sparked anger across the world. There are about 2,500 US troops in Iraq and some 900 personnel in Syria as part of efforts to strop a resurgence of the Daesh militant group. The militants once held significant area in both countries but were pushed back by local forces supported by international air strikes.
