WASHINGTON: Several Republicans in the United States Congress have replied to former US president Donald Trump’s looming Tuesday indictment by describing the criminal justice system as corrupt, in allegations that parallel their earlier attacks against the country’s elections following the former president’s 2020 defeat.

Donald Trump and his fellows in the US Senate and House of Representatives have used rhetoric that boomed his false claims of extensive election fraud to the deadly Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol by his party supporters and activists.

Critics said that the current partisan rhetoric could shake people’s trust in courts by discouraging the institutional legitimacy of the justice system.

Ted Cruz, a Republican, tweeted, “Donald Trump’s indictment is the conclusion of 6 years of the Democrats weaponizing law enforcement to hit their political opponents. Dictatorships operate like this, and the United States is supposed to be different.

Donald Trump said that he was innocent of the expected New York charges — which revolve around hush money payments to Stormy Daniels in 2016. He claimed that the investigations against him are all politically motivated.

However, Democratic Representative Zoe Lofgren said that political leaders should stand for the American system. She said that undercutting the system of government is a very serious issue and a threat to their future.

Trump has been uncontrolled in his rhetoric in recent days, calling for protest demonstrations and warning of potential “destruction” if he was to be charged. Former President Donald Trump used fiery language several hours before his party workers and activists stormed the Capitol on Jan. At least five people, including a police officer, were killed during the riot.
