WASHINGTON: Republican lawmakers leading an impeachment investigation of President Biden detailed foreign payments to his family in their 1st hearing on Thursday, but did not provide proof that the US president had personally benefited.

According to Reuters, the first impeachment hearing by the US House of Representatives Oversight Committee served as an assessment of evidence that Republican members have gathered so far regarding foreign business ventures by Biden’s son Hunter Biden, which they say suggests that Biden’s family members were marketing access.

House Oversight Committee head James Comer said that the people of America demand accountability for this corruption. James Comer added President Biden has lied regarding family members’ business agreements.

Several independent witnesses and Democrats said there was no evidence that President Biden had received any of those foreign payments while he worked as vice president from 2009 to 2017.

The White House has rejected the allegations and termed the investigation as politically motivated.

Former President Donald Trump was also impeached twice during his tenure, and some of his hardline Republican fellows have for months called for the impeachment of Biden.
