ISLAMABAD/WASHINGTON: The United States (US) is planning to impose new sanctions against Russia and China.

The new sanctions against Moscow include the usage of Iranian drones in war against Ukraine and against China for about 170 Chinese entities, which Washington perceives as illegal fishing in the Pacific Ocean, revealed by two senior United States officials. United States concerns that China is over-fishing and using its fishing fleet to expand Beijing’s maritime influence in Pacific Ocean.

Background of US sanctions

These newly introduced sanctions were first reported by the United States newspaper Wall Street Journal. Many of the sanctions are to be imposed under the new United States law introduced in 2016 known as Global Magnitsky Act, which allows the United States government to sanction the officials of foreign governments globally, who are considered to be offenders of human rights, in order to freeze their assets, and ban their entrance in the United States.

The United States has condemned Iran’s sale of military drones against Ukraine. According to John Kirby, a spokesperson for the United States National Security Council, the United States continues to supply Iranian drones against Ukraine. The penalties will be directed at several defense companies that participated in the transfer of Iranian drones according to the officials.
