WASHINGTON: The United States on Thursday imposed sanctions on a former Sudanese official and two other companies for intensifying instability in the African states.

Fighting killed thousands in Sudan

Western media reported that fighting has killed thousands and displaced millions of civilians in Sudan.

The development is the latest round of sanctions imposed by Washington after a war between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) started in April.

The cause of the conflict is the plan to integrate RSF into the regular army, four years after Sudanese ruler Omar Al-Bashir was ousted in a popular uprising.

The Treasury Department’s Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, Brian Nelson in a statement said that US will continue to target actors prolonging this conflict for personal gain.

It said it has sanctioned Ali Karti, the foreign minister under Bashir, who has become the leader of the Sudanese Islamic Movement.

It also sanctioned GSK Advance Company, a Sudan-based company.  GSK worked with Russia-based military supply company Aviatrade, to arrange parts and supplies for the RSF.
