WASHINGTON: The US has declared the efforts being made to form a coalition government in Pakistan in the wake of general elections as the country’s “internal matter,” saying it looks forward to working with the new government that the Pakistani citizens have elected.
Replying to a query, State Department Spokesperson Mathew Miller told reporters that this is ultimately Pakistan’s internal matter. Coalitions are formed in a number of countries that have parliamentary systems of government, where no party has established a majority.
Ultimately, that is not a decision for the US to make. It is a decision for Pakistan to make, he added.
Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) leader Shehbaz Sharif will be the nominee for Pakistan’s next premier to lead a new coalition alliance formed between different parties, including Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).
At the same time, it is clear that the polls in Pakistan were competitive, and we look forward to working with the government, once it is formed, that the people of Pakistan elected, the spokesperson added.
Biden Aware of Election Results in Pakistan
White House Press Secretary White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said at her news briefing that US President Joe Biden is aware of the polls results in Pakistan.
She said that the United States was proud to stand with like-minded democracies as it consistently conveyed clearly, both privately and publicly, to the Pakistani government and across the political spectrum in the country, the need to respect the will of the Pakistani citizens, and ensure a transparent election process is critical and is obviously important.
