US Says to Preserve Talks with China Despite Balloon Rift

WASHINGTON:  A top US official said on Wednesday that Washington would work in order to maintain lines of communication with Beijing despite a rift over an alleged balloon.

Deputy of US Secretary of State Wendy Sherman said that the US and China have “never stopped” communicating with each other” despite the cancellation of a trip by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Sherman said that they have, and they are and will maintain open communication lines with the PRC. Sherman added that they can responsibly manage the competition between the two countries.

She said that they (US) do not see conflict with China and believe in the power of diplomacy to stop miscalculations that can lead to conflict.

She said that the US would remain firm on concerns with Beijing. Sherman indicated that Blinken’s visit to China was postponed, saying, they hope to put it back.

US President Biden ordered the shootdown of the balloon following it crossed US territory. Beijing said that the balloon was for weather purposes and had gone astray and has accused the US of sending its own balloons over China, charges denied by the US.
