DAMASCUS: The US, which juggles its alliance with Ankara in NATO by supporting the terrorist group PKK against Turkiye, delivered 40 more military vehicles to its base in Turkiye’s southern neighbour.
The convoy of vehicles entered Hassakah, where the base is located, through the Iraq-Syrian border late Sunday.
The convoy entered Hassakah, where the base is situated, via the Iraq-Syrian border late on Sunday.
Hassakah is under the control of the YPG, the Syrian branch of the PKK terrorist organization responsible for numerous deadly attacks in Turkiye and beyond since the 1980s. Both Turkiye and the US designated the PKK as a terrorist group.
The convoy included Bradley Fighting Vehicles for infantry transport, along with vehicles carrying ammunition, prefabricated structures, and Avenger air defence systems. US military helicopters provided escort during the movement.
This shipment follows another delivery of 40 military vehicles by the US Army on June 25.
The PKK/YPG’s influence has grown notably in the region, particularly in Deir el-Zour province, home to Syria’s largest oil reserves, bolstered by material support from the United States.
The situation strains Turkish-US relations as Ankara repeatedly cautions its NATO ally against supporting terrorist entities that pose threats to its national security, despite prior assurances from Washington to remove such groups from Turkish border areas.
Since January 1, 2023, the terrorist group has carried out 560 attacks, falling within Turkiye’s counterterrorism operations in Syria.
