WASHINGTON: Beijing will deepen its cooperation with Moscow to try to challenge Washington despite global condemnation of the invasion of Ukraine, the top officials of U.S. intelligence agencies claimed on Wednesday.

“Despite international reaction over Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, Beijing will maintain its defense, diplomatic, technology, and economic cooperation with Moscow to trying to challenge the US, even as it will limit people support,” the officials said in a threat assessment report released during the annual hearing of US Senate Intelligence Committee.

According to Reuters, the assessment report largely focused on threats from Russia and China. Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines, the main intelligence adviser to President Joe Biden said, “Perhaps needless to say, China, which is increasingly challenging the US, technologically, economically, politically and militarily worldwide remains our priority,”.

Haines told the committee the US intelligence assesses that China believes it benefits from a stable tie, despite Chinese President recent sharp criticism of the US. President Xi accused the west for China’s economic problems in a speech on Monday in which he blamed the US of leading an international attempt to contain Beijing.

During questioning, US Senator Angus King, asked for Haines’s opinion of Beijing’s relations with Russia. He asked, ” Is it a long-term love affair or a temporary marriage of convenience?”. She responded it is continuing to deepen, saying she would not characterize China-Russia relations as a love affair.
